Favorite Manga
This page is to share some manga I enjoyed and which stick in my memory.
- Blank Canvas by Akiko Higashimura
- An autobiography manga about how a fine arts student ended up a manga artist. A touching story about the mentor-student relationship develops over the years and the importance of discipline and perserverence in pursuing your goals.
- Berserk by Kentaro Miura
- Not for the faint-hearted due to graphic violence (18+). If you can stomach the gore, this story has some of the most complex characters I have read in fiction, that evolve over the 30 year period of Berserk's run. Incredible artwork, RIP Miura.
- Claudine! by Riyoko Ikeda
- A oneshot from the author of Rose of Versailles. Tackles transgender issues in a thoughtful (if tragic) way. Riyoko revives the Oscar archetype character to explore the struggles of a transmale character from childhood to adulthood.
- My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness by Kabi Nagata
- Another 18+ entry. An autobiographic story depicting with frank honesty the author's struggles with mental illness, queerness, and being an adult when you struggle to function from day to day.
- Saint Tail by Megumi Tachikawa
- The first manga I picked up at an anime convention. Saint Tail is "Robin Hood meets Sailor Moon", a magical thief who returns stolen goods to their rightful owners. Meanwhile Asuka Jr is a detective in her class and is determined to discover Saint Tail's true identity.
